What is galvanized steel?

Galvanized steel has been chemically treated to prevent corrosion. The steel is coated with zinc, a protective metal that is difficult for rust bacteria to attack. Galvanized steel pipe has a wide range of outdoor, Marine and industrial applications and has therefore become an important manufacturing component.

The main way to make steel resistant to corrosion is to add other metals such as zinc. After the steel is flooded with zinc, chemical reactions permanently coat the steel with zinc. So zinc doesn't just coat the steel like paint, it actually becomes part of it.

Zinc is formed by reacting with iron molecules in steel. Most of the outer coating is zinc, but the successful coating is a mixture of zinc and iron, and the inner is pure steel. These protective layers can well resist environmental corrosion such as sea water and moisture.

Zinc also protects the steel through sacrificial layer activity. If, under certain circumstances, rust adheres to the surface of galvanized steel, zinc will be corroded first. Therefore, rust can be prevented from touching the steel pipe.

Zinc grade is usually calculated by weight of zinc per unit of surface, not by thickness of zinc. Because it gives a better indication of how much metal is being used. Steel is often individually galvanized after forming, such as nails, tubes, screws, beams and bolts.
